I can see why she might take that view, given some of the things she's said and done about folk in higher stations. But... I do wish there were some way to make her see there's nawt shameful about it.

Perhaps it's the lack of volume that concerns her...

Yet she is keen enough to make of herself a playwright and to speak on novels, so I think perhaps there may be hope.

Perhaps one of these days I can tell her about what my folks considered "bluestocking" girls. The ones who decided to learn and read precisely because they were told not to. It might appeal to that contrary spirit of hers.

I fear it would not. She is more afraid of being told that to read and learn is to be lesser in the eyes of those she has held dear.

The greatest measure of her spite is turned toward herself, I fear.

I'm afraid you may be right, as I've had the same thought often. It's a poor-served soul that thinks of themselves that way.

Perhaps with time and a little persistence, that might be set right. Matter of fact, it's one of the reasons I'm going to try to convince as many of the folk I know as possible to go see that show of hers. Every time I've shown her support, she's been so surprised at it...

I do not believe, from what she has said of home, that she is well-used to it.

I am glad that you will aid her in gathering an audience. It is a labour of love that she has made, and I would not gladly be alone in its audience.

I got that impression as well. Always nice to know I'm not the only one with a thought.

I'm not certain, but it's the way it was done at theatres where I'm from. I'll check, and if that's the case, I'll be sure to get yours along with mine. You can just pay me back for it, no worries.

I do not have much by way of money. You may as well be warned now, rather than later.

Then by all means, friend, consider it a gift. I have more than a fair share at the moment, not having to pay for lodging and getting a full wage from the Steel Agency. I'm happy to do it.

I will not press the matter, though I will say that I am honoured to be considered a friend - and say, too, that you issued no debt, whether I account one or not.

I will take the gift in the manner it is offered, then, and offer no further argument. Your friendship is, after all, a gift itself. You are, I would deem, a nerd of high degree.
