Name: Faramir, son of Denethor, Captain of the Rangers of Ithilien, Captain of the White Tower. Also, technically Steward of Gondor, but he doesn't know that yet.

Pull-point: Directly after Denethor's death. Faramir has yet to regain consciousness after Denethor's whole-hearted attempt for "Worst Father Of The Year" award.

Gender/Sex: Male

Appearance: Faramir is tall by the standards of Gondor, setting him at around 6'5"/6'6", and is described as looking very much in the vein of the Men of old. His eyes are grey and stern, and his hair long and black. He is fair-faced and beardless, and resembles his brother strongly, but is slighter of build. Since the Battle of Pelennor Fields, where he took an arrow in the ribs, he has a scar on his side.

History: Faramir was born the second son of Denethor II and Finduilas. After his birth, his mother sickened and grew weak, and her health only worsened the next year, when Denethor's father died and he became Steward of Gondor. When Faramir was five, Finduilas passed away, leaving him with only faint memories. He grew up in the constant shadow of his elder brother, Boromir, and constantly sought his father's approval, to no avail. He won the acclaim of his men and many of the people of Gondor, but was always the second son. He hero-worshipped Boromir, though, and came to believe it was right that he be the more beloved.

In 3018, Faramir and Boromir commanded together at the battle of Osgiliath, the first real fight in the War of the Ring, and survived, though the battle was lost and many men perished. Around this time, Faramir began dreaming the same prophetic dream over and over again, which led to Imladris. He wished to follow his dream, and the elders of the city agreed, but when Boromir had the same dream, Boromir and Denethor overruled him and Boromir was sent in Faramir's stead. With Boromir gone, Faramir took up the position of Captain of the White Tower, guarding Gondor's marches against Mordor. It was while scouting there that he found Boromir's body, in an elven boat in the Anduin, and discovered his brother's death. It was also there, later, that he came across two Hobbits and the creature known as Gollum, and, learning that Frodo carried the Ring which had brought Boromir to his death, turned it aside, helping the Hobbits on their way. The next day, he rode back to Minas Tirith to report this encounter to his father, who was angry with him for letting the Ring pass without taking it for Gondor.

Soon after, when the Nazgûl attacked Osgiliath, Faramir rode out again, to stay with the vanguard and see his men safe back to Minas Tirith. In this fight, he was sorely wounded, both by a Southron arrow and by the Nazgûl's Black Breath. He was borne back to the city by his men, unconscious and close to death. Believing his son to be dead, and his line ended, Denethor grew mad with grief and ordered a pyre to be built. Faramir was laid on it, and it was almost lit when Pippin - who had seen that Faramir still lived - came to his aid, along with Gandalf and Beregond, a Guard of the Tower. Between them, they rescued Faramir from the pyre, but Denethor leapt into the flames, burning himself alive. (This last part, Faramir may remember, but only as he might remember a particularly vivid dream)

Personality: Of Denethor's sons, Faramir is the quieter and the more scholarly. He loves lore and music, and is skilled with languages. When it comes to the people around him, he is shrewd and sharp, but more likely to feel pity than scorn for what he reads in them. Although he's an accomplished soldier and ranger, he is a fairly gentle and unassuming man in his own right, and never one to seek glory for its own sake. He cares deeply for the men under his command, and those he allies with.

He can be melancholy, and often seems stern and aloof, but believes at heart that there is always hope. He is, however, plagued by his own self-doubt and the deep-seated, genuine belief that he is the inferior brother. He has never loved fighting for its own sake, but will fight to the bitter end for his people, and do so gladly. Despite his self-esteem issues, Faramir is a natural leader, and both men and animals have been shown in canon to follow him into situations they wouldn't otherwise. He is filled with curiosity for the world and people around him. He is very strong-willed, with a highly-developed sense of right and wrong, but can be talked out of things he knows are a good idea, if the person talking him out of them is someone he trusts and cares for. Due to his gentleness and love for the settled life, many people take him for less courageous than his brother, but this isn't the case; rather, he's just less attached to glory and battle for their own sake than Boromir is - slower to anger, too, and quicker to forgive. Like Boromir, though, he is honest, courageous, and loyal.

Abilities: A capable swordsman and an excellent archer, and noted for his leadership and strategy. Due to his time as Captain of Ithilien, he is a good woodsman and Ranger, skilled in tracking, hunting, and guerilla warfare.

Inventory: Having come direct from his own funeral pyre, all he has are the clothes on his back (a Ranger's uniform, bloody and battlestained), his sword, and his knife.

Anything else: Possibly should disclaim that it's been a while since I read the books (like a year or so), so I may be a little rusty.
