[This is actually a pretty pleasant, if unexpected, diversion. He is having a little chuckle to himself out by the campfire.]

From what I understand: it is one of a scholarly nature, open in his enthusiasms, who delights in art and poetry, and reads much and widely; further, one who is more gentle and less boisterous, and has an interest in matters of history and philosophy, and is not much concerned with how others see him.

For some reason (perhaps because she mislikes these traits where she finds them in herself), Dee seems to think it an insult.

I can see why she might take that view, given some of the things she's said and done about folk in higher stations. But... I do wish there were some way to make her see there's nawt shameful about it.

Perhaps it's the lack of volume that concerns her...

Perhaps one of these days I can tell her about what my folks considered "bluestocking" girls. The ones who decided to learn and read precisely because they were told not to. It might appeal to that contrary spirit of hers.

I fear it would not. She is more afraid of being told that to read and learn is to be lesser in the eyes of those she has held dear.

Indeed. I knew a man who thought it could take 'im all the way up to royal court ... I gather it only brought him to ruin, and good riddance. But I wouldn't wish such a fate on our Dee.

I'm afraid you may be right, as I've had the same thought often. It's a poor-served soul that thinks of themselves that way.

Perhaps with time and a little persistence, that might be set right. Matter of fact, it's one of the reasons I'm going to try to convince as many of the folk I know as possible to go see that show of hers. Every time I've shown her support, she's been so surprised at it...

I do not believe, from what she has said of home, that she is well-used to it.

I am glad that you will aid her in gathering an audience. It is a labour of love that she has made, and I would not gladly be alone in its audience.

I will not press the matter, though I will say that I am honoured to be considered a friend - and say, too, that you issued no debt, whether I account one or not.

I will take the gift in the manner it is offered, then, and offer no further argument. Your friendship is, after all, a gift itself. You are, I would deem, a nerd of high degree.

[That's a joke. But also... he wasn't kidding about considering it a compliment.]
